Academic Publishing - Army History Series

The Australian Army History Unit (AAHU) is seeking a partnership with a service provider for publishing services, with a high level of academic credibility, for the publication of the Australian Army History Series (AAHS). Titles in the AAHS are academically rigorous books that explore a topic, subject or theme in a manner in which it has either not been discussed before, or sheds new understandings on an existing topic that drives scholarly inquiry further and makes a new contribution to the field.
AAHU are seeking a partnership for the publication of the series whereby copies of each publication are provided to AAHU for their use and distribution while the publishing provider is able to market the publication to meet their own commercial requirements.
AAHU will attract authors and will provide developed proposals and draft manuscripts to the publisher for inclusion in the AAHS. The publisher should also encourage potential authors for the AAHS and may direct potential projects to AAHU. While the publisher will be contracted to publish up to three works annually, there will be no minimum or maximum limit to the number of Works that may be submitted.
The titles in the AAHS must be high quality hardback publications, fully referenced with endnotes and bibliography, include all necessary frontmatter and a quality index. The average publication size of AAHS titles is 100,000 words and will include images, maps, tables and diagrams in colour and/or black and white. AAHU and the author will provide images and maps to the publisher, including associated permissions. The publisher, based on input from AAHU and the author, will produce tables and diagrams, and should be able to offer cartographic services.
An esteemed Australian military historian will be engaged by AAHU as a General Series Editor for the AAHS to work with authors and undertake reviews of draft manuscripts. Appropriate peer-reviews are expected to be undertaken by the publisher. The publisher and AAHU will work collaboratively to ensure manuscripts meet the standards of both AAHU, as the client, and the publisher. The publisher will be responsible for copyediting. AAHU will require the publisher to provide academically rigorous publishing services to a standard agreed with the AAHU, including but not limited to the following:
-Copy-editing by an experienced military history editor
-Production, including design and typesetting
-Proofreading
-Indexing
-Printing
-Publication
-Marketing, and
-Distribution.
The publisher will be required to develop a consistent design format for AAHS titles, in collaboration with AAHU. AAHU will be required to approve the design and final proofs of all titles. All titles will be required to include reference to the AAHU, the AAHS, the Series Editor, and include on the front cover and spine the Rising Sun Badge in accordance with Army branding requirements.
The publisher will be required to attend at minimum, quarterly production meetings. The publisher will be required to attend at minimum, quarterly marketing and sales meetings. The publisher is to provide a marketing plan for each project, using traditional and electronic media that considers the widest dissemination of the publications, in all formats for the lowest possible retail cost, commensurate with commercial imperatives.
The Commonwealth will underwrite all Works commissioned by the AAHU at an agreed rate per Work. The publisher shall bear all the other costs of publishing and promoting the Work. The recommended retail price of the books in the AAHS shall be at the discretion of the publisher, provided there is prior reasonable consultation between the publisher and AAHU.
AAHU expects a minimum print run of 1000 copies of each title published in the AAHS. 300 copies of each publication will be delivered to AAHU for their use and distribution, and 700 copies of each publication to be marketed by the publisher to meet their commercial requirements. The publisher will provide 10 advance copies of each title at no cost to the AAHU in Canberra. The publisher must also publish an e-book version, and provide access to AAHU at no cost.
A pricing schedule should be submitted in response to these requirements. This should include:
-Subvention fee per AAHS title
-Cost of 300 copies at a discount rate
-Pricing schedule for additional copies purchased at discounted rates
-Pricing schedule for remaindering stock.
The publisher should also provide detail confirming that additional works, including special book projects, will be considered.
