For the provision of Veterinary Services for the Australian Border Force Detector Dog Program
The National Detector Dog program Facility (NDDPF) was opened in 2011 merging the Victorian based breeding and development areas with the Canberra based training section. The NDDPF includes a full veterinary clinic with surgery and x-ray facilities incorporated within the Bulla Facility. The Veterinary Practitioner is expected to undertake a wide range of veterinary duties in maintaining the health and welfare of the ABF dog program. These duties include but are not lim ited to: • Examine dogs and puppies to diagnose their health problems • Perform services such as spaying and neutering • Provision of veterinary care for new born puppies • Dressing and treating wounds or infections • Administer Vaccines • Performing routine veterinary consultations, including basic health checks and testing for diseases • Cleaning teeth and performing surgeries • Operate medical equipment, such as x-ray machines • Perform Hip and elbow x-rays for general dog population • Advise DDP staff about general care, medical conditions, and treatments • Prescribe medication • Administration of the issue, storage and ordering of medicines and restricted drugs • Breeding Program support • Microchipping • Euthanize • Animal care, handling, hospital treatments and cleaning • Maintaining surgery hygiene, surgical areas and equipment • Assisting with anaesthetics, surgery and patient monitoring • Pre and post- operative patient care • General nursing, blood collection and laboratory sample processing • Whelp watch • Delivering excellent care to patients and clients • Liaising with foster carers and other agencies both interstate and overseas • Occasional interstate travel to administer health checks and rabies vaccination to operation dogs (additional training will be provided if required). • Updating medical file as required • Ability to work as part of a team • Deliver Basic Animal Husbandry training sessions to ABF staff including animal attendants On occasions medical situations arise that are of a specialist nature, outside the scope of the contracted Veterinary Practitioners skillset or the NDDPF clinic does not have the necessary support and infrastructure to manage the situation. These situations will be managed and directed to the most appropriate service provider. All Veterinary Practitioners and Nurses must have and maintain the minimum qualifications whilct working at the NDDPF. These qualifications are: Veterinary Practitioner: Doctor of Veterinary Science or Bachelor of Veterinary Science Veterinary Nurse: Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Equivalent
